The 10 Best Tournaments From Shonen Anime & Manga | CBR - CBR - Comic Book Resources

Anime is no stranger to tournaments. Whether it’s sports or action anime, there’s a good chance that every anime fan has seen at least one tournament in their lives. These arcs are often the part that leads an anime to truly take off, as tournaments get to introduce a bunch of new characters all at once, then develop them and give them reasons to have conflict with the main characters.

And for action fans, tournaments provide some of the best fights in a series, often offering some fights fans wouldn’t actually be able to get otherwise thanks to heroes being on the same side.

10 HEAVEN'S ARENA - HUNTER X HUNTER

Heaven’s Arena is unique in that it displays just how far Gon and Killua have come as fighters, while also letting them know there are people far stronger than either of them. The pair are introduced to the wider world around them, beyond that of Hunters, beating countless martial artists while also becoming more powerful. The one thing keeping it at the bottom of the list is unlike most tournaments, the whole story isn’t about the tournament but rather Gon and Killua figuring out Nen.

9 22nd TENKAICHI BUDOKAI - DRAGON BALL

Dragon Ball is basically a series of tournaments with arcs in between, but the series’ second tournament is the best of them all. In this one, Goku and Krillin are introduced to the students of the Crane School, Chiaotzu and Tien. This culminates in one of the best fights in Dragon Ball history, with Goku facing off against Tien, a battle which has as much pure martial arts as it does actual special moves.

8 SPORTS FESTIVAL - MY HERO ACADEMIA

The first opportunity all the kids of Class 1-A get to show themselves to the world, the Sports Festival is full of some great moments. Midoriya vs. Todoroki is a particular standout, as it develops Todoroki to a level we hadn’t seen before up to that point. The final match of the tournament has a surprising end well, breaking away from the usual expectations of letting the main character be in the last match.  The only thing keeping it from ranking higher up is that it simply isn’t that long of an arc.

7 MAHORA TOURNAMENT - NEGIMA

This is more of a manga arc, as the anime never got to adapt this. Though Negima is a rather plain harem comedy at the beginning, by the Mahora Academy everything’s slipped into a proper shonen action series. By this point Negi has begun his transformation from squishy wizard into martial artist, and he puts his skills to use against some of the allies of his dad, while also dealing with the first major villain of the series.

6 URA BUTOU SATSUJIN - FLAME OF RECCA

This is also more of a manga arc, as the actual adaptation doesn’t cover the best parts of this. But Flame of Recca shines during it’s tournament arc, as Recca and his friends are invited to compete in the Ura Batou Satsujin.

This sees them battle against a number of warriors with ancient weapons, training to reach Recca’s brother Kurei. This tournament has everything fans could ever want: plenty of battles, unique characters with backstories that fill out the universe, and an incredible climax.

5 TOURNAMENT OF POWER - DRAGON BALL SUPER

Easily the best arc in Dragon Ball Super, the Tournament of Power is exactly what fans had been waiting for. It features Goku and his friends battling against other universes in the hope of being the last universe standing by the end. The best part about this tournament is so many characters get their moment—even Krillin gets to look cool for a little bit. And it ends with one of the most absurd fight scenes ever—Goku and Freiza battling together.

4 ROYAL KNIGHTS EXAM - BLACK CLOVER

For many people, the Royal Knights Exam is when Black Clover finally “gets good”. Though the series had been developing it’s characters and world for several arcs, the Royal Knights Exam is when we truly get a look at the Clover Kingdom’s Magic Knight army. Every major character up to that point gets their moment in the spotlight, and the last battle between Yuno and Rill is one of the most well-animated battles of 2019.

3 GRAND MAGIC GAMES - FAIRY TAIL

The Grand Magic Games is one of the strongest arcs in the Fairy Tail series. After the best mages in Fairy Tail make their return, they find their guild has fallen to the bottom of the rankings. Their best chance at restoring themselves? Winning the Grand Magic Games.

This is a version of Fairy Tail as a group of underdogs, and while it doesn't last for very long, there's enough new, powerful mages to pose a threat to make it one of the strongest arcs of the series.

2 CHUUNIN EXAMS - NARUTO

The Chuunin exams are where Naruto fans became fanatics. It’s where the world expands, viewers are introduced to some of the other ninja teams organized. Kishimoto goes all out here, as the exams aren’t just about combat—though that comes later. At the beginning, it’s about proving their intelligence as ninja, and their ability to survive. Then we get some of the first series’ most memorable battles—like Naruto vs. Neji. By the end of the Chuunin Exam, viewers come out with a greater understanding of the ninja world, and having seen some of the coolest fights in anime.

1 DARK TOURNAMENT - YU YU HAKUSHO

For many people, the Dark Tournament represents the peak of Yu Yu Hakusho. It’s easy to understand why, as the arc pushes our four heroes in ways none of them could’ve expected. Hiei maxes himself out in the first round. The group is conspired against multiple rounds in a row, and it’s only through the sheer grit of every team member that they manage to get as far as they do. And even after getting to the last team, it still takes everything they have just to scrape out a win.
