Need liberty from medical supply shortage: Darcy cartoon - cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- “Give me your tired, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.”

Those are the iconic words from “New Colossus” the sonnet written by Emma Lazarus in 1883 to raise money for the pedestal on which the Statue of Liberty stands.

Tired, huddled masses of medical professionals are now yearning to be free from severe shortages of medical supplies to combat the wretched Covid-19 safely and successfully. The most pressing needs are for more masks and ventilators.

When you hear medical workers, officials, reporters and commentators talking about PPE, it stands for Personal Protective Equipment. That is how masks, gloves, face shields and the like are classified in the industry.

Medical workers and state governments have been seeking PPE support from the federal government and private industry donations. While they seek aid from the federal government, the federal government itself has been seeking PPE donations from private groups while it has continued to send out conflicting messages about the federal government’s own supply.

While President Trump and Vice President Pence have said that the federal government already has masks, they also said they are ordering masks and seeking donations. Politico reported the government put in an order for 500 million masks, but they may take 18 months to arrive.

At Saturday’s press briefing FEMA administrator Peter Gaynor described its supply of masks as being “scarce." But on the Sunday morning news shows he was acknowledging FEMA had a stockpile of masks.

This is a shared responsibility. We’re asking locals and states do your share share locally, and take a little burden off of us and we’ll prioritize those scarce resources.”

Gaynor doesn’t seem to understand one of the main purposes of FEMA is to take the burden off states and locals, not the other way around. That his and his department’s job.

Sunday, Gaynor admitted FEMA does in fact have a stockpile of masks. He claimed they are continuously shipping them out based on highest priority.

Ohio has received its allotment from the federal stockpile, but the Ohio Department of Health said the allotment was insufficient.

“If we do not take conservation steps now, we will not have health care workers that are protected to care for the most sick” Tramar McBride, chief of the department’s Bureau of Health Preparedness told Politico.

In a previous briefing, Trump said he shouldn’t be held responsible, Saturday he held the Obama administration responsible and medical workers, claiming they were throwing aways masks instead of reusing them.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention has now issued guidelines for the reuse of medical masks and bandannas or scarfs in their place.

The CDC issued those guidelines because they knew, contrary to Trump’s claims, that medical workers had already been reusing masks repeatedly until the masks broke down and were no longer able to be cleaned and sanitized.

The Washington Post reported that Trump was dismissing dire warnings in January of the pandemic hitting the United States. But the warning on PPE shortages came more than a decade earlier.

Politico found that a 2006 report by the National Academies of Sciences’ Institute of Medicine warned of the shortage if a pandemic struck and against repeated mask reuse.

While medical workers cope with Coronavirus and PPE shortages, there has been no shortage of gratuitous praise for Trump by Pence and the other staffers appearing with Trump at the now daily Coronavirus briefings. More masks will be needed just to prevent getting sick from that.

The New Colossus of 2020 are those putting their own health at risk to carry the torch combating the spread of Coronavirus.
