There have been numerous animated takes on Spider-Man, and most have their own cult-like following. Now, fans of the 2008-2009 Spectacular Spider-Man animated series are demanding more - with a Change.org petition.
"Now we all remember the amazing TV show called Spectacular Spider-Man. It was a great TV show for me growing up as a kid and was very well received from critics scoring 8.1 and 8.7 (and 98% of people liked the show on Google)," writes a Change.org user going by the name 'Toby.' "I was very disappointed when I found out a few years later that the show had been cancelled."
The series ran for two seasons over the course of 2008 and 2009, jumping from the CW midway through its run to Disney XD. That switch belies a reason for the cancelation - Marvel Entertainment was acquired by the Walt Disney Company shortly after the show premiered. Years later, show co-creator Greg Weisman explained his understanding of why, at the time, it was not continued.
"Sony had originally produced [Spectacular Spider-Man] as part of their overall entertainment license of the Spidey property (which of course included the extremely lucrative live action films). But in order to win some concession on those live action feature films, Sony returned the animation rights to the character back to Marvel," Weisman, who has since worked for Disney, wrote in 2012.
"So now only Marvel could produce a Spider-Man cartoon. Sony no longer could, which meant [Spectacular Spider-Man] couldn't continue at Sony," Weisman continued. "I have no idea whether Marvel was interested in continuing Spectacular Spider-Man or not. But let's assume for the sake of argument that they would have liked to. They couldn't. Why? Because Sony owned all the specific elements (designs, storyline, etc.) to the [Spectacular Spider-Man] VERSION of Spider-Man. So Marvel would have had to license all that BACK from Sony."
Sony and Disney's working relationship has evolved since 2009, but its unclear where things stand now in terms of sharing animation rights.
Toby, the person leading the charge, via petition, for a return of the series is aware of Weisman's 2012 reasoning to some degree, but wants the two sides to work things out.
"All I want Sony and Marvel to do is get together and try to see if they could make more episodes of Spectacular Spider-Man (and just split the money or something) as it was very popular and is the best Spider-Man TV by far. Hell, just look up "Spectacular Spider-Man Season 3 Petition" and you can see how many people want this show back," Toby wrote. "If you start creating more episodes of Spectacular Spider-Man that will please a lot (and when I say a lot I mean hundreds of thousands) of Spider-Man fans."
