10 Shonen Anime That Are Actually Better Than Their Manga | CBR - CBR - Comic Book Resources

dokdokder.blogspot.com

There's always a debate when it comes to manga and if it's better than the anime or not. The only more hotly contested battle is if subs are better than dubs. As with books to their live-action counterparts, the answer is somewhere in the middle, with both sides excelling at one thing and struggling at another. Sometimes there isn't a clear cut winner.

In terms of the shonen genre in particular, things tend to point more to anime due to how action heavy it is. Even with fantastic art, it's always going to be an uphill battle for a manga to contend with an anime that respects the story and doesn't butcher it. The fluidity of the fight scenes (among other things) puts these ten anime above their manga counterparts.

10 JoJo's Bizarre Adventure

That's not a knock on the manga, which does a fabulous job at capturing the weird and bizarre nature that is Jojo, but the anime does it a little bit better. A big reason for that is how colorful it is, something that the manga doesn't always have the luxury of utilizing. The animation quality is also top-notch, one of the most beautiful and fluid series around, always able to take the source material up just another notch. David Productions deserves all the kudos you can give.

9 Attack On Titan

The way the titan battles are animated is jaw-dropping in spots and does precisely what an anime adaptation should by bringing the work on the pages to life, enhancing it in a way the manga could never achieve. It pays great respect to the source material as well, never trying to fill in gaps for the sake of it as so many others have done. That lack of filler helps the anime maintain the tone the manga has, even if there have been lengthy delays in-between seasons. It's all worth it when the story is as good as Attack On Titan's is.

8 My Hero Academia

Deku And Bakugo prepare to fight

Surprisingly, a series that's as popular and beloved as My Hero Academia hasn't fallen into the dreaded filler arc territory that has plagued anime like Naruto and Bleach. They have done a great job of staying on task, and Studio Bones goes above and beyond with its animation.

They help elevate the fight scenes with the crispness of it and the musical scores used in the backdrop. The voice actor choices have also been exceptional, perfectly bringing new life to the characters.

7 Gintama

Gintama is a great example of how voice acting can bring the source material to another level. Gintama has one of the best voice casts of any shonen series, assembling a group of people who perfectly convey the humor of the series. Their timing is impeccable, turning even some of the more ho-hum jokes into laugh riots. Comedy is always a genre that's going to be enhanced by both verbal and visual queues, something the manga will always be more limited with in comparison to anime.

6 Mob Psycho 100

As with JoJo, the vibrant colors used in the Mob Psycho 100 anime help push it above its counterpart. The brightly mixed colors help give a new meaning to scenes and help convey the pure trippy-ness the source material has better than the medium of manga ever could. None of that would be possible if the animation were subpar, which it isn't, despite how simple some of the characters' faces are. The imagery only helps further the mind splitting experience the series is known for.

5 Neon Genesis Evangelion

It's a good bet that an anime series has surpassed the manga when it's the more well-known of the two mediums. That's very much the case with Evangelion, which is rightfully lauded for its storytelling and rich characters, always finding a way to enthrall viewers.

The ending may have left people with mixed feelings, but even that doesn't take away from how elecrtifying it was and how much impact it had on anime, especially outside of Japan. The manga is still good, but to get the true Evangelion experience, it has to be watched rather than read.

4 Haikyu!!

Few settings translate as well to anime as sports do. Animation helps add an epic feeling to the action, making the last shot in a basketball game seem like the end of the world or the last point in a volleyball game seem life and death. That's the case with Haikyu, which has some of the slickest animations out of any current sports-centered anime and makes the game itself feel like a war where only one side can hope to prevail. That's not a feeling that a manga can pull off as well, the single panels often stilting the action rather than letting it flow as an anime can.

3 Hunter X Hunter

The 4 main characters of HxH

Consistency is something that's often overlooked in a society that focuses more on highs and lows rather than the happy medium in between. Hunter X Hunter's anime is one of the most consistent shonen around, its animation never dipping to subpar levels like Seven Deadly Sins or even Naruto has. It helped bring some of the best fight scenes in the series to life thanks to both the rock-solid animation and some of the best music in any shonen series. Music is always such an underrated facet of fight scenes, but that's never the case in Hunter X Hunter.

2 One-Punch Man

Anime One Punch Man Saitama Awe

The animation gets a big leg on its drawn counterpart here for one big reason: It's way more pleasing to look at. You can't take away from any of the ideas or characters created by the manga or original webcomic, but it's hard to ignore how simplistic and, at times, even shoddy the artwork can be (mostly the webcomic). The anime may have some of its flaws with how it handles tone and some of the satire that's prevalent in the series, however it does a far better job depicting the fight scenes.

1 Dragon Ball Z

You could say the same of just about any version of the series, but it stands out far more with DBZ. Any manga that relies on fighting as much as Dragon Ball does is bound to be better in its anime format than on a page. DBZ as a series also helped bring not only the shonen genre but anime as a whole to the heights it currently sits at. Without it being the trailblazer or trendsetter, there's no way the industry would in the state it's in today. Even with fillers here and there, it's superior in every way.
