Summary

  • Prematurely canceled Weekly Shonen Jump manga often have potential and could have become great if given more time to develop.
  • Issues such as slow pacing, story problems, and unreceptive audiences can lead to the cancellation of promising manga.
  • The business practices of Weekly Shonen Jump can be harsh and unforgiving, resulting in the cancellation of even the best manga.

Not every Weekly Shonen Jump manga gets to become a hit, and some great manga get unfortunately canceled too soon, disappearing from Shueisha's premiere magazine. Weekly Shonen Jump is infamous for having a very cutthroat business practice where any series that spends too long at the bottom of the popularity rankings is almost guaranteed to be canceled in due time. This has given Weekly Shonen Jump a reputation of only allowing the best manga to be published, but at the same time, it’s also forced countless manga with potential to either end before they could properly develop or to ruin whatever worked for them in an attempt to boost their fledgling ratings.

Plenty of Weekly Shonen Jump manga were canceled before they had a chance to take off, and here are 10 of them that stand out as some of the best. Some of the manga listed here were canceled because of their pacing, either too fast or too slow, while others were canceled for having various story issues that they weren’t given enough time to work out before they ended. Whatever the case, something happened that caused every entry on this list to end prematurely, and that’s nothing but unfortunate.

10 The Hunters Guild: Red Hood

The first premature cancelation to be discussed is one of the more noteworthy examples in recent years: 2021’s The Hunters Guild: Red Hood. With a unique take on Grimms’ Fairy Tales, engaging metacommentary that wasn’t common for manga, and a stellar art style, especially for the female characters, Red Hood quickly became a fan-favorite, even becoming popular enough to get a print release in English. However, the series was ultimately brought down by horrendously slow pacing and an all-too-cliche initiation arc, so it makes sense that it wouldn’t last long.

9 Ayashimon

Another recent manga to be canceled too soon was 2021’s Ayashimon. Created by the author of Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku, Yuji Kaku, Ayashimon had the same stellar art and fight choreography that made Hell’s Paradise a hit. However, the story and characters were notably less mature in Ayashimon than they were in Hell’s Paradise. That ultimately brought its reputation down, especially for anyone who expected something along the same line as Hell’s Paradise, so despite having a strong start, Ayashimon was quick to fall apart.

8 Time Paradox Ghostwriter

Time Paradox Ghostwriter

Oftentimes, a manga will be canceled because the audience simply can’t get invested in the story, and a perfect example of that comes from 2020’s Time Paradox Ghostwriter. The series had a wholly unique premise that combined science fiction with the struggles of being a writer and impostor syndrome, but it was only in the West that it found success. The Japanese fanbase, by comparison, was never kind to Time Paradox Ghostwriter because of the controversial plagiarism angle, thus leading to its cancelation at just two volumes, giving it one of the shortest runs for a Weekly Shonen Jump manga in years.

7 Agravity Boys

Agravity Boys

Another canceled manga that failed to find an audience was 2019’s Agravity Boys. Agravity Boys’ penchant for nonsensical and raunchy humor made every chapter fun to read, and with Gintama having recently left the magazine to finish its story elsewhere, having a new gag manga was more than welcome. Unfortunately, there was far too little variety in the kind of jokes being told, so despite being plenty funny, Agravity Boys was never able to find its footing truly and was canceled in a little over a year.

6 Robot X Laserbeam

Robot X Laserbeam

A mangaka having a hit series isn’t always a guarantee that their next one will be a hit, and a perfect example of that is 2017’s Robot x Laserbeam. Tadatoshi Fujimaki’s first series, Kuroko’s Basketball, was a major success, and with Robot x Laserbeam having the same great art and writing, its success seemed assured. Unfortunately, sports manga are notoriously hard to sell in Weekly Shonen Jump, and with a focus on something many kids wouldn’t be into, namely golf, it never reached Kuroko’s popularity and was out in a year. With any luck, however, Fujimaki’s current series, Kill Blue, will have a better chance of becoming a success.

5 Psyren

Psyren

There are plenty of manga from the 2000s and early 2010s that were canceled way too soon, and a perfect example of that is 2007’s Psyren. With a unique power system and engaging sci-fi mystery, Psyren was very popular with Western readers during its run and was often seen as the next big hit. In Japan, however, it struggled to compete with the bigger and more established action manga of the time, and with a variety of bizarre story choices made in an attempt to keep things interesting, Psyren, unfortunately, ended in 2010 with little fanfare.

4 Magico

Magico

Another older manga that was canceled too soon was 2011’s Magico. With a cute art style, unique utilization of magic, and heavy emphasis on love and family, Magico had a lot going on for it that made it stand out from other action manga of the time, which did allow it to find success for a time. However, the manga’s fast pacing never allowed for any chances for the story to breathe, and with a cast that was largely underdeveloped outside the main duo, it, unfortunately, ended in a little over a year.

3 Enigma

Enigma

Another manga from the 2010s that was canceled too soon is 2010’s Enigma. Enigma’s focus on horror elements, mind games, and the use of superpowers outside of fighting made it come off as a breath of fresh air among the usual slew of shōnen manga, but its unsatisfying answer to the central mystery and poor follow-up to the first arc resulted in its ultimate decline. In recent years, unconventional shōnen manga like Dr. Stone, The Promised Neverland, and Akane-banashi have all found success, so it could be that part of Enigma’s failure stems from it, unfortunately, coming out far too early.

2 Zombiepowder.

Zombiepowder

Sometimes, a canceled manga is noteworthy largely because of what the creator makes in the future, and that’s best exemplified by the debut work of Bleach’s Tite Kubo: 1999’s Zombiepowder. Many elements that would make Bleach a massive hit are very much present in Zombiepowder., such as Kubo’s stylish character designs and fight choreography, and the series still holds a cult following in the West. In Japan, however, the series struggled to find success due to its weak story and characters, and despite its charm, it is seen as largely a footnote in Kubo’s pre-Bleach career.

1 Shaman King

The last canceled Weekly Shonen Jump manga to discuss, and one of the most surprising, is 1998's Shaman King. Despite being fairly popular during its run, the series was abruptly canceled in 2004, reportedly due to the author feeling fatigued at that point. In 2008, though, Shaman King was reprinted in a new deluxe edition that also featured the long-awaited ending to the final arc, and after the publication rights were transferred over to Kodansha, best known for their Weekly Shonen Magazine publication, the franchise became bigger than ever with multiple sequels and a new anime adaptation, so its cancelation is certainly the least unfortunate one on this list.

Whether it’s due to pacing issues, an unreceptive audience, or simply unfortunate circumstances, there are a variety of ways that a manga can get canceled sooner than need to be, and these 10 manga are prime examples of that. While most of them had their share of problems, some evident from the very beginning, they all had plenty of potential, and it’s certainly possible that they each could have become something great if they were given more of a chance to develop. The cancelation of these manga perfectly exemplifies how harsh Weekly Shonen Jump’s business practices can be, and that, unfortunately, is unlikely to change anytime soon.
