One Piece producers Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements have opened up about how many seasons of the live-action Netflix adaptation they want to see to adapt the full manga. Adelstein: We have hopes for 12 seasons, there’s so much material.
Clements: We’re over 1,080 chapters at this point in the manga. We have plans with [showrunner] Matt Owens for how we would break multiple seasons, and I think even if we did six seasons, we would probably only use up half of the chapters of the manga. It really could go on and on and on.
Can Netflix's One Piece Go On For 12 Seasons?
One Piece season 1 consists of eight episodes of one hour each, roughly covering the first 95 chapters of the manga. If One Piece season 2 comes to fruition, the story will have to finish the last part of the manga's first story arc, the East Blue Saga. After this, the story will jump into the Arabasta Saga, where Luffy and his crew's journey into the Grand Line truly begins.
If the Netflix adaptation can keep up its impressive momentum of success, it's possible the show will last multiple seasons. However, 12 seasons is a highly ambitious plan for a series that has just begun and that's expensive to produce. While there's no doubt the popularity of One Piece on Netflix could keep the show going, the series will have to be a wildly impressive success to get so many seasons.
It's also possible the show has an alternate ending planned that will keep the series at a shorter number of seasons. This could happen during the Summit War Saga, the final story arc before a major time skip in the manga. However, it's still possible One Piece can continue its trend of being a successful adaptation, faithfully adapting the source material.
