Centuria Explores Profound Themes Like Berserk

Created by Tohru Kuramori, serialized on Weekly Shōnen Jump

julian and mira in a ship centuria

Centuria tells the story of Julian, a young slave sold by his own mother, who escapes captivity after being severely mistreated and almost killed. Julian stows away on a slave ship looking for a new start in life and is eventually found out by the captain, and he is saved from being killed thanks to the kindness of the hundred slaves aboard the ship. On the ship, Julian meets a pregnant woman named Mira, who shows him human warmth for the first time and changes his perspective on life.

Julian, just like Guts, has undergone various heart-wrenching misfortunes since birth, from being sold and tortured since childhood, to losing loved ones.

The events that unfold after this blend the spectrum of the human condition with a horrific twist that explains the title of the series, "Centuria," which was a unit of one hundred men in the Roman army. Centuria takes Julian on an emotional journey that explores the concepts of freedom, a found family, and emotional ties, touching the core of what it means to be human by showing how people can maintain their dignity and compassion despite undergoing inhuman treatment.

One of the themes deepened in Centuria is the experience of loss and guilt. Julian, just like Guts, has undergone various heart-wrenching misfortunes since birth, from being sold and tortured since childhood, to losing loved ones. Centuria also doesn’t shy away from depicting the guilt that accompanies grief, but does it in a hopeful way, with the mourning bringing healing through finding a purpose in life. The power of connection also plays a significant role, showing that people can impact each other’s lives, with Julian finding solace, purpose, and strength in the new bonds he forms with others.

Centuria’s Art is Deeply Influenced by Berserk

Centuria’s Chapter 6 Has an Incredible Reference to the First Chapter of Berserk’s Golden Age Arc.

Centuria's world set-up and character designs combine the best elements of series like Vinland Saga and To Your Eternity, but its biggest influence, with the horrifying monsters and the general violent nature, is definitely Berserk. One of Berserk's biggest traits is how visually dark it is, because Kentaro Miura took a lot of influences from the horror genre, which can also be seen in Centuria. Centuria's art, though not on the same level, shares a lot of resemblance with Berserk, both being powerful and impactful, filled with intense drawings with striking and bold imagery.

The depiction of monsters in Centuria is straight out of nightmares and reminds of the design of the monsters in Berserk. There's a really Lovecraftian inspiration in the Mythological Sea Beast portrayed in Chapter 1 of Centuria, just like in Berserk, with the sea god in the Sea God Arc. The biggest Berserk reference in Centuria is a panel in Chapter 6 with corpses hung in a tree in the forest, which looks the same as the tree in the first chapter of the Golden Age Arc, where Guts was born out of the corpse of his mother.

Centuria’s Story Shares a Lot of Similarities with Berserk

Centuria has a Different Demographic but the Two Series Have Plenty in Common.

Centuria and Berserk have a lot of similarities in terms of having demonic entities that grant things to humans while taking something away from them, like the Godhand, the demonic gods in Berserk, and the Mythological Sea Beast in Centuria. Additionally, the eerie atmosphere, worldbuilding, and plot of Centuria are slowly opening up to a unique, supernatural version of the 15th century, just like Berserk. Also, both stories take place in a fictional medieval Europe with kings and a feudal system, and both protagonists, Julian and Guts, are deeply conflicted internally about their tragic and traumatic past.

Centuria and Berserk are very human stories that involve the difficulties that people encounter in life and are about growing and improving themselves. Both mangas are dark horror fantasies with a protagonist having to fight monsters. However, Berserk is a seinen, and even if Centuria has a lot of graphic violence, it is still a shōnen manga, which means it's a less dark story, but that has its own appeal, being able to target a broader public without some of the themes that have made the Berserk manga controversial.

Centuria offers its own unique charm, and is a promising manga perfect for fans clamoring for a brand-new horror shōnen. For these reasons, Centuria is a perfect match for Berserk's fans or for people who enjoy a dark fantasy with amazing art that is in search of a story with intense battles, monsters, a mystery world, and sinister pacts with intriguing deities.

Centuria is now available on Manga Plus.
