Editorial cartoonists reacted to the arrival of direct coronavirus relief payments in Americans’ bank accounts this week. Walt Handelsman of the New Orleans Advocate/Times-Picayune drew a shower of bills. Bill Bramhall of the New York Daily News pictured a couple sitting in front of an ATM. Dana Summers of Tribune Content Agency saw the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan as leaving a legacy of debt to our children.
Another popular topic in this week’s gallery is the crisis of unaccompanied minors flooding the U.S.-Mexico border. Right-leaning cartoonists suggested President Joe Biden was ignoring the problem and “building back better” by dressing up holding cages. Left-leaning cartoonists suggested Republicans were trying to change the subject from Biden’s politically popular relief payments, or solving President Donald Trump’s problem by slapping Biden’s name on it.
Other topics in the cartoons include reactions to a mass shooting in Atlanta targeting women of Asian descent; rumblings that Senate Democrats may reform the filibuster; Sunshine Week, which draws attention to government secrecy; New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s political crisis over sexual harassment allegations and nursing home Covid deaths; efforts in state legislatures to restrict voting in the name of election integrity; and the return of the NCAA basketball tournament in an environment still very much affected by Covid-19.
