CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Two Father’s Day gifts were delivered early Thursday when ‘Juneteenth’ was officially made a Federal Holiday and the U.S. Supreme Court again preserved the Affordable Care Act - Obamacare.

‘Juneteenth’ commemorates June 19, 1865, the day General Gordon Granger enforced the Emancipation Proclamation Act with General Order No. 3, freeing the last enslaved African-Americans in Galveston, Texas.

The U.S. Senate had passed the legislation to make Juneteenth a National Holiday by unanimous consent and the House approved it 415 to 14. President Biden signed it into law Thursday, making it the first National Holiday established since Martin Luther King Day in 1983.

Those enslaved in Galveston were not freed until two months after the last of the Confederate army had surrendered and two and half years after President Lincoln had signed the Emancipation Proclamation.

There were multiple reasons for the news of emancipation not reaching the enslaved for more than two years. Logistical, technological, educational and pure denial by Confederates.

Galveston was and still is the outer reaches of Texas and Texas was and still is the outer reaches of the United States. In 1865, there were no text messaging or cable news. Many enslaved didn’t know how to read and write, and were kept from learning how too. And most significantly, those enslaving them were in denial that the war had ended and the Confederacy had lost.

Texans denial of the Emancipation Act and the Civil War’s end, is really not that much removed from Republicans who still believe Trump really won the 2020 Presidential Election and the Arizona Fraudit.

While many Republican Senators and Representatives supported making Juneteenth a Federal Holiday, Republicans at the same time are supporting State Legislation to suppress the votes of Blacks in the 2022 and 2024 elections. They’d like to have a reinstated President Trump or newly elected President DeSantis make Election Day a Voter Suppression Federal Holiday.

Thursday the U.S. Supreme Court freed those covered under Obamacare from fears that it will be killed off. In a 7 to 2 decision, the court once again preserved the Affordable Care Act, ruling the Red States, led by Texas, that brought the case did not have legal standing to do so.

It’s expected to have been the last major legal challenge to the ACA survivability.

Happy Father’s Day to all the Dads out there.
