Turner, Brown ads get nasty: Darcy cartoon - cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A heavyweight Olympic boxer for Morocco tried to bite his opponents ear like he was ear-biting champ Mike Tyson or Shontel Brown and Nina Truner, who have been figuratively trying to bite each others heads off in a Brown-led bombardment of scorched-earth negative attack ads viewing voters have had to endure.

The two mud-slinging frontrunners in the 13 candidate primary have so far stopped short of literally trying to bite their opponent’s ear, but they still have a weeks-worth of rounds to go before primary voting ends Augusts 3.

Brown, a Cuyahoga County council member and Chair of the Cuyahoga County Democratic Party has been trying to ride the coattails of President Joe Biden, but also appears to be riding the tails of Biden’s German Sheppard like it’s chasing a cat.

Shontel Brown falsely claimed not to be directly running any negative attack ads against Turner in interviews WKYC News Anchor Russ Mitchell did with Brown and Turner. She pointed out how that would be contrary to the upstanding work she does with young people and children. Yet on the very evening the interview aired, attack ads directly sponsored and produced by Brown ran. They were not one of the several negative ads running for her campaign that have been produced by third party PACS.

Brown’s campaign began resorting to attack ads after polls in April showed her trailing Nina Turner badly by at least 8 points. The race has now tightened up, but Turner is still shown in the lead.

Turner had just been running a constant stream of standard, straightforward positive campaign ads until Brown’s campaign went negative. The Turner campaign ultimately responded with their own attacks ads against Brown and those produced by third party groups. The ad war has now denigrated the race into a mud fight that only benefits one of Brown’s and Turner’s other opponents, like Jeff Johnson.

Shontel Brown is now the subject of a Ohio Ethics Commission review for contract steering. As a Cuyahoga County councilwoman, Brown voted for million dollar contracts awarded to companies her boyfriend and campaign donors are connected with.

It is a felony under Ohio law for a public official “to secure authorization of any public contract in which the public official, a member of the public official’s family, or any of the public official’s business associates has an interest.”

The case was referred to the Ethics Commission for review by the State Auditors office and Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost.

Both Brown and Turner have picked up big name endorsements.

Brown has been endorsed by Rep. James Clyburn of South Carolina, who was instrumental in Biden winning the Democratic nomination and presidency. She was also endorsed early on by Hillary Clinton.

The endorsement of Brown from the former Senator, Secretary of State and losing 2020 Democratic Party Presidential nominee was not surprising since Turner is the former co-chair of Bernie Sanders 2020 presidential campaign that had been a thorn in Clinton’s side.

Trump supporting New England Patriots owner Bob Kraft is also supporting Brown unless, of course, she starts rooting for Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

In addition to Bernie’s backing, Turner has been endorsed by Rep Alexandria Ocasio Cortez. Here is what AOC had to say after campaigning in Northeast Ohio for former State Senator Turner:

“Ohio, thank you for the warm welcome this weekend!

It’s time to send @ninaturner to Congress - because our democracy should belong to everyday people not big money,” AOC tweeted.

" I think it’s extremely clear that Nina Turner is the candidate in this race that answers to the people of Ohio first and foremost. She has supported, she has worked in this community, she has served in this community and she understands this community’s needs,” AOC told WKYC.

Despite Brown’s ads attacking Turner as anti-Biden and anti-Democratic Party, it should be noted that both AOC and Bernie Sanders have been willing to work with Biden and his administration to pass infrastructure and budget deals, just as Turner has shown a proven ability to work with others in her long, experienced career in city, county and state politics.
