It’s unfortunate that in the cartoon on Aug. 12, the artist chose to depict “The Ugly Truth” as a gap-toothed, green-skinned (as the web version shows) hag — that is, a stereotypical witch. Perhaps readers who are sensitive to what such a representation has signified for centuries will feel, as I do, that there is a striking blindness in his using a distorted female image to represent an ugliness that resides, in this case, in the disgraced governor and, all too often, in men. And that it is women who suffer from such instances of moral ugliness makes the depiction all the more disappointing.
