New Manga Studies Strange Life of Tiny Fairies That Dominate the World - Screen Rant

A common trope in manga detailing an invading force's dominion over Earth usually depicts the invaders as massive, overly strong monsters and mankind as the heroic losers who fought valiantly and who are now actively endeavoring to reclaim their homeworld. But Jinrui wa Suitai Shimashita - Yousei, Shimasu ka? flips this popular plot device upside down, dousing it with both an overabundance of satire and ambiguity.

Mankind is no longer the dominant species on Earth and is forced to use archaic technologies because they just gave up, and no one is willing to rectify the problem. Now, the majority of the planet is populated not by a species of power-hungry brutes but tiny, easily frightened fairies who live in a literal dump. The reader learns about mankind's superiors through a hopeful, bubbly young girl who just became the new mediator for her dying race and the fairies at the United Nations Embassy where her grandfather also works.

Everything about the present situation doesn't make sense but works to establish mystery and intrigue. Despite being rulers of the world, most people know little about the fairies and those who do, including the female protagonist's grandfather, deliberately keep the information secret. The girl's grandfather even speaks in vague terms whenever she asks for help, forcing her to go out on her own. She does receive, however, a diary from her grandfather's predecessor who, oddly enough, only wrote about how Earth's rulers fed him extensively, which, ironically, led to his death.

Equally baffling are the fairies themselves. Everything the reader learns about these rulers is through the girl's interactions with them. These fairies are small, skittish little critters who are struck with unadulterated fear when confronted by a human due to mankind's unnaturally large size in relation to their own small stature. It becomes clear that the only reason why they are the dominating species is that they populate at a rate that puts rabbits to shame. Every other aspect about them isn't conducive to serving as powerful and respectful leaders. When confronted by the girl, they undermine their own authority by asking if she is their god. Some of them even prove to be either unsure of their abilities or would rather have others make decisions for them on matters that concern themselves. For example, the fairies implore their mediator to give them names when the girl, much to her surprise, learns they have none (even though her name has yet to be revealed). Many fairies are also quite forgettable.

But all of these alarming facts aren't what's truly baffling about them. They have an amazing capability that makes no sense especially since they have ruled the world for sometime now. Whenever they gather in large groups, they can build vast metropolises in one day that utilize innovative technology, including a massive mecha that is as tall as the protagonist.

By all accounts, Jinrui wa Suitai Shimashita - Yousei, Shimasu ka? is a well-written satirical manga of impossibilities, relating how an unfortunate mindset befalls people who would never in a million years succumb to such a sorry state as it would go against their very nature. This satire is only improved by the fact that this odd phenomena allows the fairies to assume a role that they would have never been able to hold normally had it not been for the aforementioned strange circumstance transpiring. All of this is then wrapped in a perfect bow of good storytelling where the reader is forced to learn everything through the eyes of a girl who knows as little as the reader does.
