Summary

  • Spy x Family explores a darker turn, focusing on characters' past lives and the war's impact.
  • Henry and Martha's romance in Chapter 99 adds depth to the supporting cast and parallels Loid and Yor's relationship.
  • Future manga chapters will continue to explore Henry and Martha's past.

Spy x Family tells an often lighthearted story of espionage and school life, with Loid Forger's fabricated family helping him on his mission to keep world peace. The family dynamics are often used as a springboard for the series' action and comedy, with Loid, Yor and Anya all having vastly different personalities that keep each chapter full of laughs. Recently, Spy x Family's manga story has taken a darker turn, exploring the past lives of characters and giving fans a deeper look at the war that ravaged their world.

Author Tatsuya Endo is able to beautifully chronicle an ill-fated romance in Chapter 99, devoting this part of Spy x Family's story entirely to exploring two supporting characters: Henry Henderson and Martha Marriott. Their romance also has important parallels to Loid and Yor's love story, and it may be foreshadowing what's to come for Spy x Family's leads, with both the spy and assassin recently finding themselves on their deadliest missions yet.

Chapter 99 Explores an Unexpected Romance

Henry and Martha's Love Story Now Takes Center Stage in Spy x Family's Plot

Henry Henderson and Martha Marriott are two Spy x Family characters that rarely have had a moment in the spotlight. Most of the time, we see them through the viewpoint of Anya Forger, with Martha being the caretaker of Becky and Henry being a teacher to both of the girls during their time at Eden Academy.

Henry and Martha's romance was hinted at during the end-of-class gala for Eden's first year students back in Chapter 97. The two shared a sweet dance for "old time's sake", and now Spy x Family is diving much deeper into their shared past. Both were students at Eden, with Martha transferring in her eighth year while Henry was in his eleventh. When Henry first saw Martha, she was performing a ballet performance that amazed and inspired him — leading to the first time he said the word "elegant."

During their time studying at Eden Academy, the two became closer, sharing tea parties together and bonding until Henry's senior year. At this time in his life, Henry was too focused on his goal of becoming a teacher to notice Martha's feelings for him, but two and a half years after he left Eden, the two would be reunited. Henry was able to come back to Eden as a teacher, but the war taking place outside the academy's walls would soon tear them apart once more.

Spy x Family Anime Announces Extra Mission

The official Spy x Family anime series is hosting an "extra mission" special event, with an original story, new merchandise releases and more.

The two future lovers were able to reconnect when he came back to Eden because the war had left a shortage of teachers. Their friendly tea parties resumed, but one day Henry was unable to comfort Martha when she told him some devastating news: the ballet troupe that she was hoping to join after graduating was disbanding because multiple members were killed during an air raid. This made Martha want to join the armed forces herself, a fact that greatly upset Henry as he pleaded with her to reconsider.

Their vastly different views on the war and how to approach it led them to part ways. At Martha's graduation party, she tried to reconcile with him, and the two shared their first dance. Henry apologized for trying to force his views on her, and Martha was ready to confess her feelings when the dance was interrupted by an air siren. She would go off to fight in Spy x Family's great war, having kept her romantic feelings to herself, but the two had rekindled their friendship.

The tea parties Henry and Martha used as a way to bond with one another were now turned into war correspondence. The two would write letters to keep their friendship going, which led to Henry developing feelings for Martha on his own; he was outraged when she was sent to the front lines and even landed himself in jail upon hearing news that Martha's combat unit was killed on the frontlines. Henry held out hope for Martha's return, but when the war ended, and she didn't come back, he started a family with a woman that his father arranged for him to marry.

Attack on Titan is one of the best modern tragedies in anime history, and Eren Yeager is proof of this.

With these recent chapters, Spy x Family is giving new depth to its supporting cast and fleshing out the dark history of its world. Henry and Martha's backstories are both fascinating, and they also draw interesting parallels to Spy x Family's two leading characters: Loid and Yor.

While much of Loid's true identity remains a mystery, Spy x Family has revealed a large part of his backstory that shows his motivations for becoming a spy. Having been orphaned in the war, Loid joined the conflict and rose in the ranks to sergeant, fighting with rage before coming to the realization that he didn't know the true reason the war had started. With both East and West twisting things to fit their motives, Loid left the frontlines when he was recruited for WISE and became a spy. Now, his main mission is to make a world free of violence, where kids don't have to endure the turmoils of war like he did.

Yor's backstory hasn't been explored in quite as much depth, but her missions as Thorn Princess show that her outlook is quite opposite to Loid's. Yor is fine with killing to protect her family and maintain peace, but her recent missions have shown that she's beginning to put her family first, as she looks for a way out of her assassin duties.

Henry and Martha's doomed relationship could be hinting at what's to come for Loid and Yor -- especially if the two find out about each other's true professions. However, Loid and Yor have something that Henry and Martha didn't: Anya; their telepathic daughter may be just what Spy x Family's leading lovers need to keep their makeshift romance from ever falling apart.

What Spy x Family Manga Readers Want to See in Season 3

Spy x Family Season 2 was one of the most popular anime of 2023, and fans want to see more of their favorite manga arcs in Season 3.

Chapter 99 of Spy x Family ended with Henry giving up on seeing Martha again and marrying the woman his father arranged for him. At the very end of the chapter, Martha is shown waking up in a house near the East-West border, indicating that future manga chapters will continue to explore this intricate part of the characters' backstories.

While the two may not have gotten a happy ending immediately following the end of the war, there may still be hope for the two star-crossed lovers. After their dance at Anya's end-of-class gala, Henry refers to Martha as "merely an old friend", and it's clear that the two never got to share their romantic feelings for each other before. However, not much is known about Henry or Martha's personal lives in the present, and Henry may now be a widower. This would allow him and Martha to reconnect and confess their true feelings for each other decades later, potentially setting the two up for a happy ending in chapters to come.

Henry and Martha's war-torn romance may also be foreshadowing further troubles for Loid and Yor, both of whom have been dealing with rising tensions in their respective jobs as spy and assassin. The Cruise Ship Arc was one of Yor's best moments in Spy x Family, but it also pushed her to her limits and had her questioning whether she wanted to continue endangering her family by being an assassin. Likewise, Loid's recent missions have seen him struggling to keep the peace, with intel being leaked and Yor's brother Yuri growing increasingly suspicious that Loid is actually Twilight. The romance between Loid and Yor -- and whether Operation Strix will ultimately be successful -- hangs in the balance as Spy x Family's story continues to unfold.

New chapters of Spy x Family are available from Manga Plus and Viz Media.
