The WarnerMedia-backed outlets have also expanded their relationship with Mo Willems for three new series and picked up an animated series from the creator of 'Dexter's Laboratory.'
Tiny Toons is returning.
Nearly 30 years after wrapping its three-season run, Babs, Buster Bunny and the rest of the Tiny Toons gang are returning with a two-season, straight-to-series order for Tiny Toons Looniversity at both HBO Max and its WarnerMedia sibling Cartoon Network.
The new half-hour animated comedy will again be produced by Steven Spielberg and his Amblin Television. Erin Gibson (Throwing Shade podcast) will serve as showrunner and co-exec producer alongside Nate Cash (Adventure Time). Amblin's Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey will also exec produce alongside Spielberg.
The new series follows the Tiny Toons gang all the way to "Acme Looniversity," the esteemed institution of higher hijinks learning, where young dreamers become professional toons. Here they form long-lasting friendships with one another and perfect their cartoony craft while studying under the greatest cartoon characters in history, the Looney Tunes.
“Tiny Toons Looniversity will capture all the clever, subversive and smart humor that made Tiny Toon Adventures such a standout series,” said Tom Ascheim, president of Warner Bros. Global Kids, Young Adults and Classics). “Fans old and new will love to laugh at and with these characters all over again.”
The original Tiny Toon Adventures ran for three seasons from 1990-92 in syndication. It was the first collaboration between Warner Bros. Animation and Spielberg's Amblin after it was originally conceived in the late 1980s by Disney animator Tom Ruegger. (Ruegger would go on to create Animaniacs, which is also returning for a new incarnation on Hulu) as well as its spinoff, Pinky and the Brain.
“For many kids, Tiny Toons was their introduction to the world of Looney Tunes and, over time, Buster, Babs, Plucky and all the characters grew to be just as beloved by an entirely new generation," said Sam Register, president of Warner Bros. Animation and Cartoon Network Studios. "The continuation of our great creative partnership with Amblin Television will bring these characters back for fans of all ages to enjoy.”
Amblin will produce Tiny Toons Looniversity in association with Warner Bros. Animation. Amblin vp TV Clint LaVigne and Audrey Diehl, senior vp series at WB Animation, will oversee day to day on the series.

Animation, HBO Max and Cartoon Network to reimagine the Tiny Toons for new audiences, and we know that fans of the original series will be just as excited to share the show with their children as they will be to revisit a childhood favorite,” said Amblin TV co-presidents Frank and Falvey in a joint statement Wednesday.
The new Tiny Toons is the latest series to be greenlit by former Freeform president Ascheim, who joined WarnerMedia in the summer as president of Global Kids, Young Adults and Classics. Register, for his part, was given oversight of Cartoon Network Studios in August as the division shifted to Asheim's purview.
It's unclear how the rollout pattern will work between linear cable network Cartoon Network and streamer HBO Max, which are also collaborating on an animated Batwheels series. The deals represent the latest ways in which WarnerMedia's linear networks are working in unison with company's recently launched HBO Max, as the company looks to bulk up its streaming platform while servicing its traditional outlets.
In other news out of Warner Media on Wednesday, HBO Max and Cartoon Network added three new projects with best-selling children's book author, illustrator and playwright Mo Willems: Unlimited Squirrels; a CGI animated rock special Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed: The Rock Special; and a pilot order for a live-action immersive series Cat the Cat's Show the Show Show With You the You. Those join multiple other projects that are in the works as part of the company's multiple-year deal with Willems. Rounding out the news, HBO Max and Cartoon Network have picked up Unicorn: Warriors Eternal, a new animated series from Dexter's Laboratory creator Genndy Tartakovsky.
