Yu-Gi-Oh!: 10 Changes Made To Yugi In The Anime From The Manga - CBR - Comic Book Resources

The difference between Kazuki Takahashi’s Yu-Gi-Oh! manga and what fans eventually got as an anime can be pretty wide. To begin with, there’s an entire first season people rarely talk about that includes a ton of wild moments that don’t even get mentioned in the sequel series we’re shown later on.

Many of the characters underwent a number of changes later on, both as characters and to their personal history. Even the lead protagonist doesn’t go untouched, as early on, there are a lot of aspects to Yugi as the protagonist that are seen in the manga but not in the Duel Monsters anime series.

10 Atem Only Has One Fair Defeat

A pretty major change made to the series is that Yugi is the only person that was capable of beating Atem. This is something they make clear needs to happen because by Yugi defeating Atem, he’s able to return to his own time period. However, in the anime, they kind of forget how important Atem’s first major loss is and just allow Raphael to defeat him in a filler arc without even having to cheat.

9 Bandit Keith Never Stole Yugi's Millennium Puzzle

A major part in the anime series during the Battle City arc is seeing Yugi having to rebuild the Millennium Puzzle from scratch, something that took him months to do, in only a matter of minutes while a building burns down around him. This is because Bandit Keith stole the puzzle from him while being mind-controlled by Marik. This was actually impossible in the manga because Pegasus actually made him kill himself by transforming his hand into a gun.

8 Panik VS Yami Yugi

In the anime, Yugi dueled a character named Panik, who existed to force people into dueling before taking their Star chips. In the anime, Yugi was surrounded by two flamethrowers and had remain calm while dueling even though the fire could’ve activated at any point.

In the manga, Panik is a bit more direct—he straight up said he was going to strangle Yugi to death if Yugi couldn’t win.

7 Yugi VS Joey At Duelist Kingdom Didn't Happen

Perhaps one of the biggest changes they made to Yugi and Joey was having them duel quite frequently. The two battled in the Duelist Kingdom to decide who would go on to fight Pegasus, but in the manga, this actually never happened. In the manga, Yugi went up against Mai while Joey went up against Bandit Keith. In the end, Yugi would challenge Pegasus on his own without needing to defeat Joey.

6 Yugi Fighting Joey Again

Battle City Yugi vs Joey/Marik

When Yugi and Joey actually dueled in the manga, it was during Battle City. Both of them chose to battle to prevent Tea from being forced to swallow a poison capsule. This just shows how everything has to be much more hardcore in the manga than in the anime. With a much more direct villain, Yugi’s clever tricks had to be turned up a notch to be taken seriously.

5 Yugi's First Fight Against Kaiba Didn't Have Exodia

In the second Duel Monsters anime series, Yugi’s first time meeting Seto Kaiba is when they battle using holographic monsters. But in the comics, this actually wasn’t the first time they faced one another. There, the two of them met at school, where Kaiba stole Yugi’s Blue-Eyes monster that he’d borrowed from his grandfather, and tried to attack Yugi for bringing it up. In the end, Yugi not only defeated him without using Exodia but also sentenced him to live in the Duel Monsters world.

4 Relies On Dark Yugi

Yugi is presented as this incredibly pure character in the anime, and that’s largely because he’d already worked through all the weirder parts of himself.

After realizing he had another side to him that was going around doing whatever he wanted, Yugi would actually specifically swap places with Yami for the sake of letting him take care of the jerks going around. It was a bit of a cowardly way to live life though, so he came to stop.

3 Didn't Remember What Yami Did At First

Very early on in the manga, Yugi actually had no clue what was happening with Yami Yugi. Yami would take over like Hulk, and get to do whatever he wanted, and when Yugi regained control, he would only notice that he didn’t remember what happened while he was “gone”. Eventually, he makes peace with having Yami Yugi inside of him and it’s this that allows him to understand what happens when Yami Yugi is out.

2 Yugi Was A Bit Of A Perv

Something a lot of people are unaware of is that younger Yugi was something of a pervert in the manga. The main anime certainly glosses over this to make him seem a bit more innocent, but there are not many kids his age that aren’t interested in the opposite sex. In the earliest parts of the manga, Yugi takes interest in a certain video Joey has. Then, later on, fans learn the two of them have begun trading tapes between one another.

1 Knew Tea Liked Yami

Yugi and Tea from Yu-Gi-Oh

In the anime, Yugi rarely talks about the very clear Superman-Clark Kent dynamic Tea has with him. Tea even once pines over Yami losing to Yugi because she doesn’t want Yami to go away. But in the manga, this is solved early on in the Duelist Kingdom part, where he knows she seems to like Yami Yugi rather than him. Still, Tea assures him that either way, it’s him, which isn’t entirely true.
