Blue Period, a manga by Tsubasa Yamaguchi about a high school student discovering his passion for art, will be getting an anime adaption this year.
The series focuses on Yatora Yaguchi, a smart but troubled student who can’t seem to find interest in anything. He then spots a huge painting by an upperclassman in the art club and becomes obsessed with paintings, colors, and drawings. Being a naturally gifted student and a hard worker, he picks up techniques quickly and sets his eyes on the Tokyo University of the Arts for college.
While the anime announcement did not give a date or a studio, Blue Period has potential to be a stylistic masterpiece, as it already has a unique art style with beautiful visuals that include real art pieces. The way Yaguchi learns art techniques also teachers the viewer about them, making it an educational watch.
Blue Period originally began publication in June 2017 in Kodansha’s Monthly Afternoon magazine. Kodansha USA has begun publishing the comic in English through trade paperbacks with the latest release being volume two on Jan. 5.
