Fans of the nearly 20-year-old shojo manga series Skip Beat!, hold on to your hats because the anime cast has returned for a brand new adaptation. Before you get too excited about a potential new anime, that’s still not going to happen anytime soon. Instead, however, fans of the series are being treated to a brand new drama CD starring the same Japanese voice actors who provided the voices in the anime.

Skip Beat! is a shojo manga series created by author Yoshiki Nakamura. It first launched in February 2002 and just recently released its 46th volume in Japan. The story centers around a girl named Kyoko Mogami who has devoted her life to helping to support her childhood best friend, Shotaro. She even follows him to Tokyo and pays all his bills while he attempts to become a famous idol. What she doesn’t realize until it’s almost too late is that he’s just using her and has absolutely zero romantic interest in her. Vowing to get revenge, Kyoko enters the entertainment business and pursues a career of her own that will put Shotaro’s to shame. Skip Beat! received an anime adaptation in 2008 along with a live-action adaptation in 2011.

Crunchyroll News reports that the new drama CD is being included with the current issue of Hana to Yume magazine, which is on sale now. On the new CD, the cast performs an audio adaptation of chapters 274-279, the last six chapters of volume 45 which was released in May 2020. The release of the magazine lines up perfectly with the launch of volume 46 and is sure to get fans caught up with the story in the best possible way.

This is not the first time this series has received a drama CD, but rather the sixth time. The first drama CD was released a mere seven months after its debut and covered the first volume while the most recent was released in 2017. That edition was released along with the first printing of the 40th manga volume.

The fact that Skip Beat! is still going after almost 20 years is pretty amazing. Fans like to talk about certain Shonen battle series lasting forever but this series is still going strong with no end in sight and that’s a pretty remarkable feat. Though when you consider the engaging story and likable characters that you meet along the way, along with innovative concepts like the audio CD, it’s no wonder why this series has gained such a devoted following.
