5 Best Anime That Stayed Close To The Manga (& 5 Best That Are Totally Different) - CBR - Comic Book Resources

Many anime fans may not be aware of this, but a vast majority of anime aren’t original creations – they’re actually adapted from their source material, known as manga. The remaining anime are either adapted from novels, light novels, manhua or manhwa, with a very small minority of these shows being studio originals.

Since it’s impossible for a manga with hundreds of chapters to be adapted into a 12 or 24-episode anime, studio directors often take liberties with the content they have on hand. Sometimes, they present an anime that is uncannily similar to its manga, while other times, they come up with original storylines that have nothing to do with its source material.

10 Stayed Close To The Manga: Parasyte -The Maxim-

One fine day, parasitic aliens invaded the earth, taking over human bodies by controlling their brains. Teenager Shinichi Izumi finds himself in the middle of this invasion, when a parasite (later on named Migi) is unable to take over his brain, so it ends up taking over his right hand.

Both are now anomalies in a world where two apex species are secretly waging a war against each other, with each side hoping to win this blood-filled battle.

9 Was Totally Different: One-Punch Man

One Punch Man Season 2

Saitama is so strong that he defeats all of his opponents with one mighty punch, due to which he is always seeking a grand battle with an opponent who can give him something worth looking forward to.

The young cyborg Genos, his self confessed disciple, accompanies his sensei wherever he goes, jotting down every little pearl of wisdom that comes out of his sensei’s mouth, hoping to absorb as much knowledge as he can from him.

8 Stayed Close To The Manga: The Disastrous Life of Saiki K

The Disastrous Life of Saiki K

On the surface, Kusuo seems like a regular high school boy, but beneath that appearance, he hides astronomically powerful superpowers. Right from telekinesis to x-ray vision, and even altering the DNA of all of humanity – Kusuo can do it all.

Yet, all that this boy wants is peace and quiet in his life, something that his ever-increasing entourage of friends and acquaintances have made impossible to ever happen!

7 Was Totally Different: Blue Exorcist

Blue Exorcist: rin is good at cooking

This anime revolves around the lives of the twin boys of Satan, both of whom swear to kill him because of all the innocent lives he'd taken. Since the manga hadn’t published enough chapters, the studio was forced to come up with an original story for the second half of the first season.

Nothing that occurs during those episodes ever happens or is mentioned in the manga, either. Season two picks up exactly from the point where the manga chapters stopped being adapted and continued the story forward.

6 Stayed Close To The Manga: Demon Slayer

Banner featuring characters from Demon Slayer.

After his family was slaughtered and his surviving sister was turned into a demon, Tanjiro wanted only two things in life. The first was to turn his sister Nezuko back into a human, and the second was to kill all demons, including their leader Muzan, as a form of vengeance.

While the anime had minor differences when compared to the manga, the studio did not drastically alter the anime’s plot or characterizations in any shape or form

5 Was Totally Different: Tokyo Ghoul √A

Haise Sasaki In Tokyo Ghoul RE

While the first season of Tokyo Ghoul was fairly faithful to its manga, fans were shocked at how drastically its sequel had been changed. Massive changes were made that not only contradicted character motivations and decisions, but also altered massive plot points.

For example, Kaneki joined the Aogiri Tree in the anime, while in the manga he did his best to dismantle the organization from the outside. Many violent scenes from the manga were also toned down and no official explanation was given for these changes.

4 Stayed Close To The Manga: Jujutsu Kaisen

This anime follows the drastic changes that take place in the life of Yuji Itadori after his body becomes the vessel of the King of Curses, whose name is Sukuna. He agrees to become a jujutsu sorcerer in exchange for clemency for his life.

Fans of the manga rejoiced with every episode that aired because not only was the anime completely faithful to its manga, but it also practically lifted panels from the manga and animated them.

3 Was Totally Different: Bunny Drop

Daikichi is a 30-year-old man who is in charge of taking care of a little girl called Rin. The anime was praised for the manner in which the duo’s father-daughter relationship was handled, without compromising the slice-of-life feel of the show.

Fans were, however, shocked to learn that unlike in the anime, the manga ended with a 16-year-old Rin confessing her feelings to a Daikichi who was well into his 40s, going so far as to admit that she wanted to give birth to his child.

2 Stayed Close To The Manga: Monster

Neurosurgeon Kenzou Tenma has always lived his life as a good man, who wanted nothing more than to climb his way to the top of the hierarchy in his hospital. However, his life goes for a complete toss after the occurrence of a very minor incidence.

The anime then begins chronicling the changes that start occurring in Kenzou’s personality, attitude, beliefs, morals, and even philosophy, especially when his dark past comes back to haunt him.

1 Was Totally Different: Naruto

naruto training

This is not surprising, considering how basically 40% of Naruto and Naruto Shippuden are nothing but filler episodes that found no mention in the manga. Apart from that, the anime took remarkable liberties from the source material as well.

One example would be how the blood, gore, and violence from the manga were toned down for TV audiences, with the other being how Sakura’s massive character development was butchered so that she would always remain the “damsel in distress.”
