Since their debut in 1998, the Powerpuff Girls have been a household name. Created by Craig McCracken and starring Cathy Cavindi, Tara Strong, E.G. Daily, Tom Kane and Tom Kenny, The Powerpuff Girls quickly rose to prominence among other similarly scheduled Cartoon Network shows of the time. Starring the titular Powerpuff Girls, Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup were ceaseless in their quest to protect the citizens of Townsville from any that would do it harm. While the Powerpuff Girls were only one of the many iconic cartoons from that particular era in Cartoon Network history, they did get a chance to team up with plenty of other fan favorites in their very own epic comic book crossover event.

Released in 2015, The Powerpuff Girls Super Smash Up by Derek Charm, Jeremy Whitley, Rachel Deering, Jorge Monlongo and Cat Farris, began with a colorful villain making trouble in Townsville. After dealing with the ever-awful Fuzzy Lumpkins, the girls are whisked away to an important appointment by their father, Professor Utonium. There they are greeted by their friend Dexter of Dexter's Lab fame for a tour of his legendary workspace. Inside the lab, Dexter shows the Girls and Professor that he has almost perfected a way to travel to other dimensions, namely those of other iconic cartoons such as Samurai Jack or Ed, Edd, n' Eddy. When Dexter's sister Dee-Dee shows up in his lab, she causes a horrific accident involving Chemical X and Dexter's machine, leaving the now monstrously mutated preteen girl stranded in the world of Courage the Cowardly Dog.

Dexter and the Professor get to work on a way to find Dee-Dee and bring her back before she does any irreparable damage to the multiverse. Before they know it, the Powerpuff Girls begin a chase throughout the landscapes of every millennial's favorite cartoons. The task might have been easy enough, if not for Dee-Dee swallowing Bubbles' interdimensional transporter bracelet, giving her the ability to travel the multiverse all on her own. It doesn't take long for Dee-Dee to begin interacting with the denizens of these other worlds in both menacing and humorous ways. In their absence, the supervillains of Townsville have risen up to wreak havoc across the city. Without the Powerpuff Girls to save the day, the Professor becomes scared and despondent, leaving it up to Dexter to find a way to protect the city until the girls have returned. Thankfully, Dexter's reputation reaches far beyond that of an ordinary child's, and with one call the Justice Friends are on the case.

The Justice Friends are more than capable of handling the Powerpuff Girls' rogues gallery. Before the Girls can completely fail at their mission to capture Dee-Dee, both Dexter and Professor Utonium agree to bring Mojo Jojo in on the case. The Powerpuff Girls' longtime nemesis and former assistant to Professor Utonium devises a wicked plot to capture Dee-Dee. Miraculously, Dee-Dee is restrained and transformed back into the hyperactive child she always was. Unfortunately, this gives Mojo Jojo the opportunity to steal the transporter that Dee-Dee had swallowed, and he once again leads the girls on a thrilling chase.

The final confrontation against Mojo Jojo leads them back to the villain's own hideout. With Dexter's data of the multiverse in hand, Mojo Jojo is able to begin transmitting a signal that transforms all beings in every corner of the multiverse into their very own Mojo Jojos, creating the Mojoverse. The Powerpuff Girls and their allies can only watch as the tables are turned, quite possibly for the last time. At least, until Dee-Dee arrives inside Mojo Jojo's hideout to ask him one very important, very iconic question, "What does this button do?" With the push of a shiny red button, Dee-Dee undoes all of Mojo Jojo's terror, and things are right once again. With the upcoming Powerpuff live actions series, there are plenty of fan-favorite characters to look forward to seeing on the small screen, though it's doubtful anything of the same caliber as the comic book crossover is on its way anytime soon.
