Attack On Titan: 10 Ways The Anime Can Fix The Manga's Ending - CBR - Comic Book Resources

dokdokder.blogspot.com

With the recent release of the final chapter of Attack on Titan, a vast majority of fans have been dissatisfied with the ending. While some might have expected this, because there is little chance of a show that has been running for eleven years to come to a close without stepping on a few toes, the complaints of the hardcore fans ought to be addressed.

It's not coming from anywhere. Collectively, fans agree that after chapter 121/122, the Rumbling Arc was lukewarm at best. They hoped that the ending would make the final arc worth it, but it did not. There are multiple ways that the anime could easily correct the manga's ending, as well. Can the anime fix these issues in the second part of the final season?

10 More Screen Time For Eren

Eren Yeager Scouting Regiment

Eren, the main protagonist turned antagonist, was not around for 16 of the 17 chapters of the final arc. This is a huge problem, as fans of the show had become attached to the character who had become their narrator, and to rip that away from them without a suitable character to take his place left many feeling alienated.

Despite the clear villainous downfall of the freedom fighter, he was still supported, and if more chapters were telling the story from his point of view, the ending wouldn't have felt so lackluster.

9 They Need To Provide Better Explanations For The Events Within The Finale

It's become a running joke in the fandom that if all other explanations fail, then you can simply yell "Paths!" to justify anything. Unfortunately, it seems that this was taken to heart, and with Eren not really having a reason for what he did.

In fact, he went out of his way and stated that he did not know why he did what he did. That's completely unacceptable, especially for the final chapter of a story. The anime should spend some time explaining, even an ambiguous one, instead of a cavalier "I don't know".

8 They Need To Maintain Character Motivations

Throughout the series, Eren was reluctant to start a war with the rest of the world to protect Paradis. When Willy Tybur declared war, Eren was disappointed. Sad even. He waited until the last moment because he did not want it to come to this, but when it did, he did not hold back.

All the nuance of Eren's character motivation was thrown to the wind, completely and utterly rejected and destroyed, replaced entirely with how he was driven by his affections for his beloved Mikasa.

7 They Could Have Foreshadowed Eren and Mikasa's Tie

While it's a good storytelling device to have the main character return the unrequited love he received from his childhood, it was done poorly. So poorly, in fact, that the anime only has one season to give Eren enough screentime and imply that he's doing it for Mikasa, so that when he declares his love for her in the final chapter, even as selfishly as he does, it does not come out of anywhere.

To do something unexpected without any kind of foreshadowing is not clever, it is alienating.

6 They Should Have Kept The Ending Consistent

Attack Titan

It's common knowledge among the fans that the writer, Hajime Isayama, changed the ending of the show several times throughout the runtime. Initially, it was meant to be bleak and depressing, with a tragic, gut-wrenching conclusion. As difficult as that may be to swallow and process, at least it would have made sense.

Isayama has claimed that his decision to change the ending came from his viewing of Guardians of the Galaxy, but that was after almost a decade worth of plot was laid for the original ending. The anime should continue with the original storyline and ending.

5 Ymir's Love For King Fritz Is Disturbing

Origin Of The Titans

With how much time the manga spent outlining the atrocities that King Fritz committed, he was not someone to be idolized or loved. He sought to expand his territory by abuse and harm, and it was revealed at the end that Ymir, who shouldered the brunt of his abuse, was actually in love with him the entire time.

It wasn't a tragic, Stockholm Syndrome kind of love either, it was glorified and even celebrated. Mikasa's love for Eren and Eren's love for Mikasa is meant to be a parallel between King Fritz and Ymir, and this entire sequence needs to be rewritten.

4 The Death Of Eren's Mother Needed More Explanation

Carla Yeager Death

It was a pivotal character-defining moment when Eren saw the Titanised Dina Fritz, his father's ex-wife, devour his mother, Carla Yeager. One of the most iconic scenes at the beginning of the story, where the child Eren watched his mother die as he did nothing. It was revealed, in just a single frame with no fanfare or implication, that Eren forced Dina to eat his mother.

Why? It's not clear. But with the way this was delivered had no point, and served no purpose. Either give more weight to this sequence or remove it entirely.

3 Armin's Hypocrisy Is Nonsensical Considering His Previous Opinions

Armin Writing At A Table

"Thank you for turning yourself into a mass murderer for us," said Armin, after meeting Eren in the Paths realm in a suppressed memory. Just several chapters earlier, Armin has maintained that talking is the better option and that no amount of killing is going to change that.

He changed his tune for no reason, and that's so out of character for him. Consistently, the story explains how intelligent Armin is, and how thoughtful. To flip between such extreme opinions on the Rumbling so quickly needs to be addressed.

2 Zeke's Motivations Should Have Come From Within

Zeke Yeager Glasses

While trapped inside the Paths, Zeke spent countless years building sandcastles, having lost all hope. When Armin showed up to say hello, he was able to convince him that life was worth living over the small things in life. This, while true, is something Zeke has said himself countless times. The character of Zeke Yeager is an intelligent and capable one. He would not need Armin to talk to him, he would figure this out himself, and that's what needs to happen to redeem his character.

Nothing needs to change either, he can simply take Armin visiting him as a sign that it is time to fight back.

1 Levi's Fight Deserves A Fitting End That Stays In Line With His Character

Levi Ackerman Salutes The Scouting Regiment

One of the few scenes that everyone unanimously loves is the scene of Levi saluting the Scouting Regiment, his body torn from war and battle. Attack on Titan has never shied away from character deaths before, and there is no other fitting moment than for Levi Ackerman to take his last breath saluting his comrades and joining them in the afterlife.

It would be an appropriate send-off to one of the most loved and respected characters in the show, who, unlike Armin, Eren and Ymir, at least remained consistent in his drives.
