The Promised Neverland: 10 Ways Emma Is Different In The Manga - CBR - Comic Book Resources

The Promised Neverland's anime adaptation portrays an accurate depiction of Emma. She is still an optimistic and idealistic girl who is determined to save her entire family. She doesn't want to kill demons, but rather, she wants to find a way for the ones she cares about to live peacefully.

Her efforts to find the best solution often ends with her pushing herself too hard. The anime version cuts out many of the struggles that Emma went through, making her journey seem easier than it was in the manga's version. The manga tested her ideals by introducing her to all sorts of characters, yet she was still able to stay true to her own beliefs despite the things she went through.

10 She asked Leuvis If They Really Needed To Fight

When she is forced to confront Leuvis during his hunt, she asks him if they really needed to fight. Emma asks her enemy for an opportunity to resolve matters peacefully, which Leuvis refuses, unable to resist the thrill of hunting someone as intelligent as her.

Emma states that this is a shame, but that she will do what she has to to keep herself and the ones that she cares about alive. This scene shows that although she wants to cling to her idealism, she will fight and kill a demon if she has no other choice.

9 She Learned More About William Minerva

Emma looks determined

Unlike the Emma in the anime, the Emma in the manga was not satisfied with staying in the hideout. She made plans to go out to Goldy Pond in order to learn more about William Minerva.

Since the hideout was already occupied, Emma decided that she would rather fulfill her dream of finding and living amongst a society of humans than to try to live with Yugo, since he clearly did not want any of the children there.

8 Emma Doesn't Go To Find Mujika

Emma prepares to meet Him

Instead of searching for Mujika herself, she asks Don and Gilda to search for them in her stead. This shows how Emma grew to fully trust the other children with important tasks besides just Norman and Ray.

In the meantime, she focused on finding Him so that she could reforge the promise. Emma has her priorities in order, since making a new promise was the only way to get all of the children safely to the human world.

7 No One Really Argues With Emma's Desire To Spare The Demons

Don supports Emma

When Emma tells the Grace Field House children that she doesn't agree with Norman's plan to eradicate the demons, a couple of people offer some brief objections. However, everyone quickly agrees with her that Norman's plan is wrong, despite cheering for his idea not that long ago.

In the anime, Gilda offers a longer and more heartfelt objection to Emma's opinion, but like everyone else, she is more easily swayed by Emma in the manga.

6 Emma Did Not Get A Pen Part From Vylk

William Minerva’s Pen In The Promised Neverland

Vylk is a character that does not exist in the manga. It was too convenient that he happened to stumble across William Minerva's dying body, and that he kept the thing that Minerva was holding onto for so long.

As an added convenience, the pen tells Norman how to cure the deadly condition that he and the other children have. The pen served as a convenient plot device that tied up some of the loose ends created by the absence of some of Emma's comrades.

5 Emma Doesn't Bond With More Demons

Emma smiles at Vylk

In the manga, Emma only bonds with Sonju and Mujika, who saved her life after she and the other children escaped from Grace Field House. She doesn't need to, because those two demons were enough to prove that demons were capable of being good and living alongside humans.

Vylk and his granddaughter existed not only to give Emma the pen part, but to reenact the Martha scene in Batman v. Superman, as Norman hesitates to kill them once he discovers that the granddaughter's name is also Emma.

4 She Makes More Of An Impact On Peter Ratri

Peter wishes he had grown up with Emma

In the anime, Emma extends a hand to Peter and gently asks him to join her. Peter smiles sadly at her offer, but states that he doesn't believe that they can change the world. He also believes that he can't change.

In the manga, Emma tells him to join them much more aggressively, showing just how determined she was to save him. Peter still takes his own life, but Emma's conviction and unwillingness to see him die makes him wonder if they could have been friends, before he concludes that that kind of world was too bright for him.

3 She Is Too Late To Save The Demons From Norman

Norman In The Promised Neverland

In the anime, Emma arrives in time to talk Norman down. Although many demons had already died by the time she arrived there with Mujika, there were still survivors. In the manga, Emma doesn't make it in time to save any of the demon nobility from Norman's wrath.

This Emma was never able to change Norman's perspective of demons, as he expressed that he didn't have any regrets about the things that he did.

2 Emma Loses Her Memory

Him asks for Emma's memories

Him agrees to grant Emma's wish to send all of the children to the human world. However, the price that he asks her to pay is her memory of her family. When she arrives on Earth, Emma is unable to remember a single thing.

This doesn't seem to happen in the anime, as Emma seems to immediately recognize Phil when she reunites with him. However, because she had always been so caring towards her family, they searched the planet to find her.

1 Emma Experiences Loss

Emma cries

In the manga, Emma loses more people that she cared about. Isabella is killed by a demon when she sacrifices herself to save Emma, Emma briefly thought that she lost Norman, and Yugo and Lucas sacrificed themselves to save the children.

These are painful losses that Emma experiences in the manga, yet it makes her seem like a stronger character, as she continues to push forward and do whatever she can to protect the children that are still with her.
